Your Finances - Before rushing out to look at homes, it's super important to get your finance in order. Gather your pay stubs, bank statements and your last two years of tax returns. Neighborhood(s) - Location, Location, Location is classic, but still holds true today as the first three rules of real estate.

  • Are you able to afford a home in the area you want to live in?
  • For your price point, are the homes going to be large enough, or have enough bedrooms & bathrooms?
  • Can you save money and get more home for the dollar in an alternative neighborhood?

Make a check list of your wants and needs - I think you should break your wants and needs into exactly that - wants and needs! You can also make sub categories like "Nice to haves" and "Dream features." Just a word of wisdom; I have had a ton of people miss our on great deals or just great homes because they HAD to have the hardwood floors. The California Association of Realtors posted a statistic that 69% of homes shoppers that "had to have a pool," end up buying a home without a pool. So just keep an open mind and look at all of your options!
